Take it from a gay man with good fashion sense. It MUST be black. Only black will work.

Is the tie striped? Try to pick a matching (not neccessarily the same) pattern shirt. As for the color, try different shades of blue. Every color looks different on a personso try it on and see what works. You can also try a REALLY light purple or even a solid black shirt.

if the tie has other colors in a pattern try picking one of those colors - otherwise if it's a solid purple, go a few shades lighter in the shirt color- a lilac/lavender shade for example.

1st: Is there a pattern on the tie? If so, what does it look like, and what color?
2nd: What kind of purple? Is it neon, deep, dark, light?

I think Blue shirt or a pink shirt. But if you don't have either wear a purple. Purple tie could fit with a black shirt too.
