Pineda De Mar is certainly handy for getting to Barcelona. There is a train (Linea R1) every 30mins, the journey time 1hr 15mins and the fare is little more than €4.

However, Pineda is a little on the quiet side, especially for 3 teenagers, and there is not much to see apart from the beach and one main street opposite the station. I can recommend the Golden Taurus Park Hotel, which overlooks the beach and is a short walk from the station. You would probably enjoy Calella more. It's literally next door to Pineda and is an easy walk or ride on the land train. There is more to see and do, including a long pedestrianised shopping street. The beach is clean & wide, with a coarse sand and a number of cafe bars right on the beach. If you want the option of night life then you will find it in Calella. In the other direction from Pineda, are the resorts of Malgrat, Santa Susanna, Lloret de Mar & Tossa de Mar. A boat trip from Calella to Tossa de Mar is enjoyable and probably the best way of getting to Tossa.
So I would recommend using Pineda de Mar as your base with the option of going in either direction to do your sightseeing etc in addition to visiting Barcelona where, of course, there is plenty to see. In fact, you will probably wish to do this trip a couple of times during your stay.
