Participle phrases have active and passive forms but they do not have a tense. Their time reference is clear from the verb in the main clause. In participle phrases, the active participle (-ing form) has an active meaning and passive participle (-ed form) has a passive meaning. In many cases, participle phrases do not contain a subject. The subject of of the main clause usually acts as the subject of the participle phrase.
