If you want to become a military officer, do you need to go to ROTC? Can you just go to a 4-year university and join the military afterward?

The US military procures Officers through 4 routes...

1. The Service Academies (about 20%) - West Point, Annapolis, USAF Academy, etc

2. ROTC (about 70%)

3. OCS/OTS (about 10%)

4. Direct Commission (<1%) - for Lawyers, Doctors, Chaplains and some Scientist and Engineers in some branches

So yes...I HIGHLY suggest doing ROTC if given the choice..you kill two birds with one stone. Much better than 16 weeks of OCS getting treated like whale sh*t after college..with a lower guarantee of the job you want..

As for the US Army, the three primary commissioning paths are USMA, ROTC, and OCS. For the first two, generally, you spend four years in university working toward a bachelors degree and simultaneously preparing yourself to earn a commission. As for OCS, you can apply for that after you've earned a bachelors degree, or after enlisting then applying. Of course there are minor exceptions and a lot more details, but that's a start.

All those "?" characters. Wow, impressive.

There is ROTC which is surprisingly a TON of fun to me! OCS (OTS in the air force) and its about 12 weeks for college graduates. And then there are the academies. But personally if I had to pick I would definitely pick ROTC by far over all 3!
