Trying to understand the difference between an adapter, a converter, and a transformer for internat. travel?

I always get confused as to what I need to have for my electronics while traveling abroad.

Next week I am going to South Korea and China..
When I went to the travel store, a sales associate helped me out with what I would need
She gave me a universal adaptor, and told me the same plug that is used in Europe will be what I use in S Korea and China
She then also gave me a converter.

But then I read up on the subject a bit more, and was wondering if I need a transformer?

I don't know why this is so difficult !
Can anyone tell me in simple words what I will need in these 2 countries, and for which appliances/devices I need to use an adapter or converter or transformer?

Thanks! :)

A converter IS a TRANSFORMER which drops the 220 volt electricity used in many foreign countries to 110 volt so that you can use your various electrical gizmos that you typically use at home. The adapter is a device that will plug into a foreign country's electrical outlet, and will have a North American outlet on its face. You plug the adapter into their wall outlet, plug the converter into the adapter, and then plug your curling iron, ipod charger or whatever into that. Click on the URL below to see what their outlets look like.

Converter is needed only when the device that you had can not accept other country current, like 110 volt ,220 volt etc.. or else adptor will be fine to plug in .So just take a look of your device to check out if it cover the the volts ,something like 110---220 volts. Then you will be fine without any converter.
