Hi, My name is Jack.
I am an international student who just came to Australia (Sydney) in Feb this year.
I passed a public examination in Hong Kong and got into UNSW to study Comm/Law
I am the only international student in class (law classes).
My classmates are all smart people with excellent presentation skills and brilliant mind.
The problem is that I can't really communicate with them even though most of them are really nice.
I am EXTREMELY lack of confidence to speak with them. Even if i did speak to them, i made too many hesitation which made the atmosphere embarrassing.
I'm really frustrated and seeking help from native English speakers on the ways of improving.
I read, write and listen to English everyday, but I do not speak it so frequently.
I really know I have to speak in order to improve my speaking.
But the problems is I am not immersed in Australian community even though I live in Sydney.
I have no Australian friends and I don't know in what ways I can being in touch with them.
Is going to church a good idea to immerse in the community?
I will be studying in Australia for 4-5 years, I definitely want to speak good English before I go back to work in Hong Kong. I'd appreciate any comments or advises. Thank you

Church might be helpful but in Australia the churches are generally not the social hubs that they are in the USA. And the locals are not comfortable with overt religiosity.
When the other students go for coffee or to the Pub, join them. Easy on the grog, stay with light beer.Keep away from other Chinese students and China Town.
Many of your fellow students are from out of town, some from small country towns, and feel just as isolated. A possible way to break the ice is to discuss the course work with the other students and asking them about the significance of the articles in the news papers. It is OK to tell them that you lack confidence when speaking.
You will know that you are being really included when they start taking the p1ss.

i comprehend what you advise with the lack of self belief speaking to human beings, i will somewhat shy that way too. Your English, in words looks fantastic, and that i'm particular in case you went as much as chat to human beings, in case you made some blunders alongside with your speaking or no longer, they does not decide you. in case you communicate to your classmates, that is a extensive help in recovering, and that i'm particular they may well be there to help any way they could. So the only way you additionally could make friends there is merely socializing. in case you're making friends with the human beings on your classification, you will start to strengthen into closer, and while that occurs you will strengthen into close exterior of the region too; they are going to start to ask you places, etc. once you're speaking to them, do no longer act too worried, i'm particular they are going to haven't any problem.

The TTSUU software can help you, TTSUU (Text to Speech Universal Utility) is a Text to Speech software that converts any text into natural-sounding speech. It reads any text for you. You can also convert the text material into WAV or MP3 audio files with this tool, so that the resulting MP3 can be played on many other devices such as iPods, PocketPCs and CD players etc. And TTSUU can even generate lyrics for you when converting text material into audios. When playing the audio, those devices with the lyrics capability, will display the original text, and therefore it will be possible for you to not only hear the text material but also get a look at the content through the display. The interface of TTSUU is very simple and intuitive, the two pillars in the interface serve as the area where you can add sticky notes that highlight points in the text content. You can pick off any interesting and salient parts of the text from any electronic documents such as MS Word Documents, Emails, Web Pages, PDF Files, etc and copy into these notes, and these can be colored to draw your attention easily.

TTSUU allows you to slow down reading speed to learn the pronunciation. We provide multiple language voices: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian, Finish, Japanese, Chinese(Mandarin, HongKong, Taiwan), Korean, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, etc.

Try listening to songs in English, and sing the lyrics. That will get you to speak fast. Also, you'll practice your English by yourself and you'll be more confident once you talk to people.

And yes, going to church helps you since it gets you to talk to people(:

Don't worry, have confidence in yourself. You'll never speak good English if you take the chance (;

Good luck!!
