Differences between simple and compound sentences in terms of FUNCTIONS?

Hi every one,

I am going to write a MA paper on the topic of the differences between simple and compound sentences in terms of their functions, yet I just have a little ideas so far, can anyone suggest anything?

For example,
Simple sentences use linking adverbials to link discourses while compound sentences use coordinators to connect ideas in clauses. In turn, the relationship expressed by linking adverbials, to me, seems to be more versatile and explicit since there is more linking adverbials than coordinators.

Any more ideas? Thanks so much in advance.

"linking discourses" sounds like gobbledygook. Compound sentences also link discourse. One might suggest the simple sentence is a single connected discourse while the compound sentence is multiple but related discourse but that is still pretty unnecessarily wordy.

Is the simple sentences adverbials versatile because of the limiting nature of singular subject and verb? One could argue that the compound sentence is more versatile because the freedom from such limitation.

Just some food for thought.
