with guys (i.e. professionals, not thugs) walk up to them and start talking with an intention to get the phone number or a possible date?

Depend on the girls, depends on the guy, his approach, and what he's really after.Women can tell when a guys is just trying to get laid, or make a conquest.
In most cases, if you arrive with that intention, you'll go down in flames.
The key is to be polite, and sensitive, if she doesn't want to talk, go away
