Why do people have to do things or make decisions that are not sustainable?

A guy wants to buy a car, so he bought it. He's now happy, so what? He moves on to have a desire of another thing....

A woman wants a pair of high heels, so she bought it. She is now happy, and she now wants to buy something else?

The short-term happiness is obviously not sustainable. It will just repeat again and again. Why do people still do it?

I think its because they put their sense of themselves out there in the world outside and dont have an inner sense of themselves that is fulfilling so that they are playing with the variables at a distance rather than looking at what is going on internally - Its like feeling upset so rearranging the furniture rather than dealing with the inner problem - The world of shopping for things is a vast escape route away from the problems of the self and it is working all the time by needing constant 'new'.
The neverending process of wantiness, then buying is just a reflection of the inner turmoil that needs appeasing rather than addressing so its just a deflection
