In an inealstic collision, most of the kinetic energy of the system is converted to heat (note that "internal energy" is a microscopic description of heat).

In an explosion, the reverse happens. Usually chemical energy involved in the explosion is converted into heat, sound and light energies. If there are fragments produced, these fragments acquire kintic energy.
