Culture question, please help.?

When you go to a close friend's house as a guest for dinner, do you help them do the dishes or at least take the plates to the sink? I was brought up in a Chinese family, and in Chinese culture, guests would help the hosts to do the dishes, or take the plates to the sink as a courtesy. So I don't know if this is just a Chinese thing. Do Americans or Europeans do the same?

Is it common for guest to help the hosts to do the dishes, or take the plates to the sink in western culture? Thanks.

Thank you very much.

Yes... it is always polite to help the hostess clean up the dishes from dinner. That way there will be more time for everyone to visit and enjoy each others company after dinner. The more who help the shorter the task will take. So your Chinese culture practices are the same here in America. Hope this helps. :-)

I always take the plate to the sink and wash the plate off at my friends house because he has a dishwasher.
I really hate it when people leave the plate in dish water over night >:|
It's definitely an American thing.
