Culture question, please help.?

When you go to a close friend's house as a guest for dinner, do you help them do the dishes or at least take the plates to the sink? I was brought up in a Chinese family, and in Chinese culture, guests would help the hosts to do the dishes, or take the plates to the sink as a courtesy. So I don't know if this is just a Chinese thing. Do Americans or Europeans do the same?

Is it common for guest to help the hosts to do the dishes, or take the plates to the sink in western culture? Thanks.

Thank you very much.

For most American families, I see that this is the case. When people start to clean up, you can go ahead and start clearing the table. Or you can ask, "Is there something I can do?"
