1. potential energya. town gas is a product of petroleum.
b. too much oxygen and sulphur will react while heating in air and cause acid rain.
P.S: nitrogen doesn`t react with anything in normal condition.If you want nitrogen to react , a lot of energy and high pressure is needed.

in hong kong, town gas is nothing related to coal; it's made of naphtha (by catalytic steaming reforming) and natural gas.

Surely, the answer of Q1 must have been mentioned in the science book, if the book consists of a chapter that taught energetics.
