Hazard with cat biting power cord?

My cat sometimes bites power cords and other cables. Luckily so far no accident has occurred except that cables are damaged. Recently I heard that a friend found his dog dead besides a power cord with his head burnt. I know nothing about electricity and I'm eager to know how I can prevent hazard to my cat and my home. Is there anything I can do with the power setup to make it safer?

Note: I recently read that GFCI improves power safety and I wonder whether it's relevant to my case. I'm not living in USA and GFCI is not a must at home and I'm not familiar with it.

Have you tried hot pepper sauce on the cords?
參考: They sell plastic cord wrap to confine unsightly power cords behind Stereos, TVs, etc., its easy to spiral around the cords for some protection. The hot sauce will deter any biting, reapply if necessary.

You could always look at something like a cable cover.

I always stopped my dogs chewing by keeping toys available for them. There's a good page from wiki on stopping your cat from chewing, might be worth a look.

Armour shield your cables with something that can't be bitten through chain-mail would be good and it ensures pussy lives a little longer, trunking is good but plastic or UPVC which can also be chewed, although it takes a bit longer either way and may dissuade the little furry feline,

Put the cat outdoors where it belongs.
Cats are animals not meant to be kept in the house.

My cat bit through a power cord ONE time and survived. Never bit through a power cord since that time about 14 years ago. Lesson learned. You can't really protect 100% of the cord's length. Some of it will always be exposed to adventuresome animals. When an animal bites into a cord, Darwin's theory of evolution takes over - survival of the fittest. If the animal survives, it's fit.

You might try some kind of repellant if it doesn't deteriorate the cord.

GFCI won't prevent that problem because lamp cords are only two wires.

Arc Fault Breakers would likely be better for protecting your pets from harm but not 100% effective.

Ground Fault breakers only trip on a short circuit and leakage to ground. This may not occur when your pet bites trough the cord.

They sense arcing between current carrying wires which would be the likely condition as the pet bites through the cord especial 2 wire lamp cords.

Replace the damaged cords at once. They are a shock and fire hazard.

Also, make sure you have plenty of chew toys around for the pet, They are less likely to chew cords when they are distracted with chew toys.
