An employer calls me up and asks me to come in for an orientation to show me around the work place, and fill out some paper work... does this mean I got the job? was i hired?

Yes, you are hired. Orientation is where they tell you about the company and show you were the bathrooms are, and start the basic training (like explaining when they expect you to show up before your shift starts, where and how to punch in, etc). In Canada you will be paid for orientation (as you are with training, by law). Congratulations!

It sounds good, but to keep yourself from being disappointed, assume you do not have the job until they make a $$$ offer and give you a starting date.
