Why are airlines special?

The subject line of your question is a little odd, but rather than snipe at it like the other responses, I'll try for a straight answer.

All airlines specialize to some degree as to the areas that they operate. For example, British Airways operates within, or into and out of the UK. In the US, American Airlines operates more flights to South America than most US carriers, while United operated more flights to Asia. This in of of itself makes each airline a little special - they all go to differing destinations.

Some specialize in low cost, no frills flights between popular destinations ( although "frills" are pretty rare on any carrier unless you go first class).

There have been some that specialize to appeal to certain customers - The was a Hooters Airline that had the flight attendants in the Hooters girl outfits, that provided service mainly to popular golfing and gambling venues, trying to appeal to a segment of the male market place.

Regional airlines specialize in operating smaller aircraft on shorter range flights to hubs where larger airlines have operations.

Cargo airlines specialize in hauling freight, not passengers.

Some small airlines are very specialized, and may only offer flights between a few locations. For example, Chalk's Airline operates seaplanes between Miami and couple of destinations in the Caribbean. At one point there was an airline (Wings) that operated between a small suburban airport Wings (KLOM) in Philadelphia and Philadelphia International. US Helicopter operates schedule service between Manhattan and JFK and Liberty Airport in Newark. During the summer there are small lines that operate to islands like Block Island and Martha's Vineyard
