From http://wright.nasa.gov/airplane/torque.html

The product of the force and the perpendicular distance to a pivot (or hinge) is called the torque or the moment. Torques produce rotations in the same way that forces produce translations. Namely, an object at rest, or rotating at a constant angular velocity continues to do so until it is subject to an external torque.

thx

What is moment?

The definition of "torque" is already given in your question. It is the product of force and the perpendicular distance from the pivot (or axis of rotation).

Mathematically, torque T is written as,
T = F.d.sin(a)
where F is the applied force
d is the distance between the point of action of the force and the pivot
a is the (acute) angle between F and d

since the unit for F is Newton (N), that for d is metre (m), and sin(a) is dimensionless. Hence, the unit for T is N.m

The result of applying a torque to an object is to cause the object to rotate. Torque is a vector quantity, normally its direction is specified as clockwise or anti-clockwise.

In the given problem, the torque of 24 N.m causes the door to rotate about the hinge in a clockwise direction.

A: A torques is NOT a force. It is a "moment" that makes an object to rotate.
Be aware that "torque" and "force" are two different vector quantities in physics.
