Rectal bleeding. Does it sound serious?

This is an embarrassing subject for me and I don't really want to go to the doctor.
I have had it on and off for a few years. Only little speckles when i wipe. But today there was more than I've had before.
I've heard that dark blood is a sign of internal problems and bright red blood could be an external tear in the rectum but Im not sure. Im scared it might be something serious because I've had it for a few years. only an odd time though, not on a regular basis. Any help would be great. Thanks :)

So tell me...is it "Bright Red?" Because if it is, you are dealing with Hemorrhoids or a fissure. I have had mine on and off for the past 35 years, so don't let a few specks make you nervous. It's just a Hemorrhoid.

Chances are you may have a tear or piles BUT you can't get an accurate diagnosis online and if it was a sign of bowel cancer are you saying you'd literally rather die than say something to a GP that they have heard thousands of times before. You must have seen the ad on TV, they don't care how you say it, what words you use, just go and see them and tell them.
