Is the following sentence grammatically correct?

I could tell it broke their hearts as they broke the news- they would help me if they only could.

Interesting sentence. I would put a semicolon, ie ; between "the news" and "they woud help me,", etc.

How about "I could tell that it broke their hearts to break the news, and that they would help me if they could."
