I usually go on holiday alone. It is usually arranged through a travel agent.
The advantage is that you can go where you want, when you want. When you get there there is no-one to tell you "I don't want to go there. It's boring and etc.
The most annoying disadvantage for me is that you are charged "SINGLE ROOM SUPPLIMENT" for a small room, usually at the back of the hotel. (Personally I don't mind paying extra for a double room if it is for single occupancy, but paying an extra £15-40 extra PER DAY for a poky wee room with barely enough room to move I don't like, but most of the time you are not given a choice.
My holidays have been a coach tour and three week long Citybreaks.
If this is your first holiday on your own I'd advise that you go with an all inclusive. You could also go on package tour, whether a coach tour or a cruise. That way there will be other people around
If you are talking about ARRANGING your holiday yourself from scratch them I have not done so and I wouldn't know where to start.
You'd need to arrange your own transport, hotel room, holiday insurance, (If your British don't for get your E111 card.) and etc. There are all those hidden cost which you will need to be aware of . ALWAYS read the small print.
Hope you have a wonderful 2012.
