I got my US green card and entered the US border in 2011 Feb. Since I haven't got my US citizenship, to retain my green card permanently I have to stay there for 5 years. Otherwise, I will need to apply for the re-entry permit before 2012 feb to maintain the status of my green card. In my case, I am currently studying in Canada and I am able to go to the US every 6 months so I am wondering if I still need to apply for the re-entry?

- Whether you are going to apply for Re-entry permit or not, your US Citizenship exam would likely be delayed. You need to have half of your time in US in order to apply for citizenship. If not, you need to wait longer until you have half of your time in US for the last 5 years.
- "Studying" is consider as a temporary thing. Your resident status should be safe in my understanding to the rules as long as you keep returning to US.
- In my opinion, apply a re-enter permit to be safe. In case you cannot come back when you planned to. Returning Permit must apply within US, so it could be too late when you need it.
- Bring information related to your Canada Student Status whenever you return to US. (In case the officer gives you trouble.)
- Remember to file tax in your resident State every year.

But please be prepared that you may experience issues when you return to the U.S.

you are green card holder, Canada is just a next door neighbor to US people. you should not need re-entry premit ( save some money too ). because no visa required to in and out the broader.
yes, you are right, you need continuely live in USA for 5 years to qualify for citizenship application. but since you are studying in Canada, not much you can do now.
5 years stay rule is for citizenship propose only, it will not effect your green card statute. but you do needed to travel back to US every feww months, ( consider that is holiday vacation... )
