(x+1/x)^2 = 3^2
x^2 + x/x + x/x + 1/(x^2) = 9
x^2 + 1/(x^2) + 1 + 1 = 9
x^2 + 1/(x^2) = 9 - 1 - 1
x^2 + 1/(x^2) = 7

Using the formula : a^2 + 2ab + b^2 = (a+b)^2

x^2 +2(x)(1/x) +(1/x)^2 = (x + 1/x)^2
It is known that x + 1/x=3 , and 2(x)(1/x) is a constant=2(x/x)=2

x^2 +2 +1/x^2 = 3^2
x^2 + (1/x)^2 = 3^2 - 2
x^2 + 1/x^2=7
