In this case, renewing your passport and getting a visa will be your only way.

Let me answer you backward:
1. The difference between a passport and Home Return Permit is by using a Passport and visa, you enjoy consular protection from your own country. It will not be easy if Chinese want to do something.

3. Since you have a foreign passport (non-British/Portuguese), I will say the best way to do is to see if you can apply for a HKSAR Passport or not.
You get your residency from your parents. So the Immigration Department has already classified you as a "foreigner" or Chinese already.

So if they allow you to apply, then Home Return Permit.
Otherwise, passport and visa.
