Chronic Kidney Failure in WHWT - Herbal remedies?

Hi all
Been such a long time since Ive been around here! Im turning to here because I know quite a few of you will probably be quite knowledgeable on this! Im currently in the process of taking on a female 13yr old WHWT with Chronic Kidney Failure. She is having a second opinion today at the specialists to see just how advance it is but at the moment its not looking too good. Ive been talking to the vet who is quite progressive in his thinking regarding diet and treatments etc (he actively supports me in raw feeding and is always open to new treatment ideas for my other westie) and he suggested that although her life expectancy is not looking too hot at the moment, it might be worth trying some herbal remedies as well as the specialised diet. Has anybody looked into this before and can recommend anything? I know there are companies out there that have specific remedies already made up – but they are almost £130 for 75mls and obviously they don’t list whats in them! I know that nettles can help with reducing waste products in the system and Aloe Vera should reduce her vomiting – anyone else a bit more clued up than me in this area?!

Thanks in advance…

Thanks for the list - what are the properties of each of these and how will they help? And yes, she will still be undergoing regular vet treatment and sticking to the diet etc - as you stated, its more of how I can make her more comfortable and help to alleviate symptoms, not to cure her.

Thanks everyone - as a side note, I feed RAW and have done for four years with my current dog. I dont buy pre-made raw foods though, I weigh and measure my own. Im going to check out a few of the links.

First and foremost, make sure traditional western veterinary medicine has nothing to offer that can help her. THEN and only then, turn to herbal remedies.

Herbal remedies usually can't fix anything that western medicine can't fix, but sometimes they seem to. If the dog is in renal failure, then she's in a great deal of pain. You might try treating that. If her 'failure' is chronic, there's no real help for her except alleviating her pain until it can't be alleviated any more and then euthanizing her.

We just went through this with one of our Golden Retrievers. It's heartbreaking.

Good luck!

I am so sorry to tell you this but , you have to say goodbye and the sooner you do it the kinder you are, it is unfortunate for you and your dog that it has come to this but what you don't want is for complete shut down when the kidney and then the rest of the organs pack in for good and the dog . Sorry you don't need to hear what follows nor do you need to witness anything nasty. Promise me that you will ring the vet and ask him to visit your home in the next 48hrs and let him go to sleep for the last time, you should all say goodbye and remember all the fun times as that is what having a dog is about, they are to make you feel good not sad. Yes i do know how you feel as we had to make the same decision in october 2008 and it still hurts writing this, but for God's sake do not let him go into complete shut down. We didn't but we never want to put a dog through that just so that we get a few hours more with the dog we LOVE because them few hours could mean severe pain and stress for your pet and an image you can never forget. Please do what is right even if it feels like hell at this present time. You will thank me in the long run. Thinking of you and your dog xxxxxx

You need the help of a Holistic vet. Here is a good one you can contact for help;

his website address is;

I would not trust just anyone when it comes to herbal uses. There are far too many out there giving out false and misleading information and doing far more harm than good. Listen to the professionals that have been educated to learn about these things.

Hi I too am a raw feeder (over 15 yrs) and have been lucky enough not to have had this problem. Can I suggest that you ask on the link below regarding diet and treatment (natural) ? There is also a face book group (raw feeding) which is full of others experiences and advice. Best of luck x

I have never had a dog with kidney failure, but have had 3 cats with it, the 14 yr old one I have now has less than 30% of his kidney function. I was told he would die within a couple months, that was 3 yrs ago, and he is still going strong. I feed him small meals throughout the day, so not to tax his system with one or two large meals I also switched to raw food.... SWITCH to raw....it will help him alot more than the special vet diets . I had put this cat on a special brand name , sold at the vets , expensive kidney diet....it almost killed him...He got worse and quickly....so I switched to raw. Go to Hare -Today (.com) or do a search for Hare today, you will come to a place that sells raw ground foods for pets. Try the ground rabbit with bone and organ first... that is what my boy eats... It is worth a try. It is expensive, but you feed so much less than canned or dry food. My dogs both eat this and they are 75 lbs each but eat only 2 cups a day each.... and have for years. and both dogs are just a little heavy. Tracy at hare today is very knowledgable about feeding animals, and will help with information . she is a great resource also.
Hare today also sells a mix to put with the raw meat and bone and organ to make it a whole food for cats. I don't use it . I do give my boy some cheap tasty cat food once in a while, but if it is once a week I would be surprised. He really only gets it when he steals from the other cats plates. This raw seems expensive and it might be a bit , but it has saved me from more vet bills, saved my maine coon cat, and all my animals are now healthy. the dogs have no itching, or smell, all the animals teeth are white and strong. good luck ...i wish there were a magic bullet to stop the disease......
