Is it bad for a cat to eat dog food and vice versa?

Okay, I know this sounds kinda funny. But I have one dog and one kitten at home. My dog started eating the cat's food, and my cat started eating the dog's food. They still eat their own food, but also each others. Is this a bad thing?

Just be aware that dogs that eat cat food tend to get really fat due to the different calories/fat in cat food versus dog food!!! My cats like to nibble out of my Chihuahuas food bowl now and again, but because the kibbles are so big compared to the cat food, they don't eat much.

Dog and cat food are formulated to meet the dietary needs that are specific to each species. So in other words yes, it is bad thing. Just because an animal likes other food doesn't mean its good for them or has the appropriate vitamins or nutrients that is essential for good health.

Pets will do that. I think the cat is more at risk eating the dogs food. It contains more ash and that can have an effect on the cats urinary tract infection.

Absolute not! Any commercial pet food has been cooked and taurine is destroyed in the cooking process. Taurine is an essential amino acid for the cat - without it he can develop heart problems and/or go blind. The taurine is added to all commercail cat food so that is what the cat must have. Dogs (and humans) can make taurine in their bodies and cats can't so it must be added to any food that has been cooked. I think the dog can eat the cat food (though I have never owned a dog). Apparently the cat food is "richer" with more fat and meat protein that may not benefit the dog and cause him to put on excess weight.

Occasionally is fine, but dog food doesn't quite have enough protein for cats and cat food has too much for dogs, so it's better if they eat their own food most of the time. You will probably have a harder time keeping the dog away from the cat's food, so put the cat's dish where the dog can't get at it. Anyone who has both cats and dogs learns that cat food apparently tastes much better than dog food.

No, and it's fairly common. Just make sure they both eat.

Not occasionally but not as a regular diet. Pet foods are designed to meet nutritional needs for the species it is made for. Dog foods don't contain enough calcium and no taurine which is essential for cat health. Cat food is really high in protein and dogs don't need that much, may lead to problems. As long as each of your critters is predominantly eating the type of food made for his species, a nibble of the other's food is just fine--but make sure it is just a nibble.

It isn't bad for occasionally, but on a regular basis, it will be bad. Cats & dogs have different needs, Cats need a lot more protein & taurine than dogs.
