There is no electric field outside the 2 plates carrying equal and opposite charges.

It is because the charges are attracted to the inner sides of the two plates. That is, the +ve and -ve charges are facting each other, leaving the outer sides of the plates without any charge. Sine electric field cannot exit in the metallic plates, the field on the inner sides is not able to "penetrate" through the plates to the outer side.
