The earliest known reference to baseball is in a 1744 British publication, A Little Pretty Pocket-Book, by John Newbery. It contains a rhymed description of "base-ball" and a woodcut that shows a field set-up somewhat similar to the modern game—though in a triangular rather than diamond configuration, and with posts instead of ground-level bases. William Bray, an English lawyer, recorded a game of baseball on Easter Monday 1755 in Guildford, Surrey

According to Ken Burns Baseball, the idea that the rules were written down by Abner Doubleday in Cooperstown were just a myth, as Doubleday said so himself. Baseball is game that originated from the sports rounders, and cricket. The first official baseball team was The New York Knickerbockers, who played in Hoboken New Jersey. The first professional team was The Cincinnati Red Stockings.

If you're really interested in baseball and it's origin I highly recommend Ken Burns Baseball. It's a 10 part documentary of the game of baseball starting with it's origins going all the way through the first decade of the millennium. If you have netflix, it's available on instant. If not, it is available for purchase, however, I imagine it would cost a bit, as it is 10 DVDs.
