2NO(g) + O2(g) <---> 2NO2(g) delta H <0
suppose an equilibrium mixture of NO(g), O2(g) and NO2(g) is disturbed by a temperature increase. Predict the effect on the rate of formation of NO2(g)

ans.When the temperature is increased, both the rates of the forward reaction and the backward reaction increase, but not to the same extent*. Thus, the rate of formation of NO2(g) increases.
*In this case, a net backward reaction occurs when the temperature is increased.
我唔係幾明個答案,又話a net backward reaction occurs,temperature increase reaction 應該向左出NO+O2,點解rate of formation of NO2 會increase既?

Increasing temperature necessarily increases both rates of forward and backward reactions. In the close system with gas mixture, when temperature increases, the gas molecules gain kinetic energy and collide with each other more vigourously, the molecules move more faster and therefore the rates of both forward and backward reactions will increase.

By Le Chaterlier's principle, since the forward reaction is exothermic, the equilibrium position will shift to the left when temperature increases, that's why a net backward reaction would occur.
