Let x(t) denote the amount of some substance which is dissolved in water in a tank of volume w liters.

請問以下哪個是正確?

w = amount of water including the amount of substance , so w is the amount of the mixture. ( w = mixture = pure water + substance)

w = amount of water not including the amount of substance , so w is the amount of only pure water. ( w = pure water. mixture = w + substance)

Based upon the way it is stated, because the substance is DISSOLVED in the water. Therefore, the "w" will INCLUDE the substance that it has dissolved. By the way, the unit for "w" is in liters, not pounds or kilograms. As we all know the density of the water. Therefore, we can easily figure out the amount of substance (in weight) that has dissolved in the water.
