正確點來說，是應該將 this afternoon's session 改成 the session this afternoon.

this 與 of 都屬於介詞，在同一句子中兩個介詞沒必要相連在一起，所以直接說 this afternoon 就可以了。

I went to town centre on Sunday. (O)
I went to town centre this Sunday. (O)
I went to town centre on this Sunday. (X)

全句的變化如下：（請注意 meeting room 前應該加冠詞）

I need to set up a meeting room for this afternoon's session.
-> I need to set up a meeting room for the session this afternoon.

其實兩者基本上可以隨時互用。

I need to set up a meeting room for the session this afternoon 是指我在下午才set up a meeting room，所以與原句意思有點出入。在此情況下的確應該說 of this afternoon.

I need to set up a meeting room for the session of this afternoon.

因為如果不加of，this連得其實是前面的動詞 (請參考town centre的例句)

I need to set up a meeting room for the session this afternoon.
=/= I need to set up a meeting room for the session to be held this afternoon.
上一句的this afternoon會變成主要子句的時間點（set up的時間點），有造成誤會的危險。宜寫成下一句的方式，才比較明確。此外，還可以寫成...for the sesscion of this afternoon。
