Pronounciation question, how do you pronounce "j" or "ch"?

When pronouncing "j" and "ch", do you use the "tip of your tongue" or the "flat of your tongue" to touch the roof of your tongue?

When I pronounce "ch",(for example, muCH" it seems that my back of the tongue is touching the roof, is it the same for most you?

In modern English, I would say the tip. However these sounds in most languages have resulted from the fronting of G or K before a front vowel (cf., DonCAster and ManCHEester, or Scots kirk and brig with English church and bridge), so there must have been an earlier stage when the tongue position was still closer to where we move it to pronounce G and K.
