What are the advantages and disadvantages of living near a river valley?

Advantages:
access to water;
access to the river allows boats to travel for trading;
irrigation canals;
food source; all animals require water, therefore animals would be in proximity to the water, in addition to fish;

Disadvantages:
invasion via seaways, i.e. Vikings attacked cities far inland via water veins;
water is attractive, and thus brings different peoples together. this can result in conflicts and wars;
heavy rains will rise the water level and flood establishment
