2. Seed project to save British meadows launched

Daniel Boettcher (Science correspondent): The kind of habitats behind me is rare and getting rarer, as stocks at the moments were only two percent of what they would have been in the 1930s. There's already been great effort; try to conserve and try to restore these kinds of habitats through commercial seed growers, farmers, private landowners; but sometimes, the problem is that they don't have the full range of species and that's what this project is trying to address. Behind me, now, you can see seeds being collected. Those will then be grown on. They would've to be passed to commercial growers to be used in conservation projects in the future. Now, Stephanie Miles, who is in charge of this part of the project here, is with me. How important is this kind of work and how does it differ from what already going on?

Stephanie Miles: What already going on is quite good. But what we're doing is we're strengthening the seed collection which are available to the commercial seed growers. So sometimes it's quite difficult to know where the seeds coming from if you're buying seeds in. And, the commercial seed growers need a good reliable source of UK single species seed sometimes.
