Hi, Leah. I’m Jennifer, an online Chinese teacher from China.

Generally speaking, “您好 (nínhǎo)” and “你好 (nǐhǎo)” both mean “hello.” “您 (nín)” shows more respect than “你 (nĭ)” does, and is often used to call those who are older or with higher ranks.
In addition, as for other way to say “hello,” we can also say “嗨 (hēi)” and “喂 (wèi).” These two words are more casual and wildly used in close friends.

Are you still got any questions? Please feel free to contact me at [email protected], I’m always happy to hear from you.

By the way, I’d love to recommend you a great site which provides all kinds of free Chinese learning materials for language learners such as popular Chinese expressions, Chinese culture stories, sample Chinese tests and so on. You can visit:

你好 (nǐhǎo) - hello
您好 (nínhǎo) - hello, used to greet someone older/in a higher position
嗨 (hāi) - hi (loanword from English)
嘿 (hēi) - hey
喂 (wèi) - hello/hey (usually used on the telephone)

That's pretty much it. Hope this helps. :)

You can say "Wei". (Hi)

You can also say "Zao An". (Good Morning) Good Afternoon, ect

Neen Hao is saying hello usually to an elder. Among younger peers it is usually ni hao.

Strictly speaking "nin hao" and "ni hao" both mean how are you, not hello per se. The difference between the two is nin is used for greeting seniors, superiors, high ranking officials; ni is used for peers. When greeting friends with a "hello" in Chinese, some would say "wei" 喂 (wey) which is the word they use when answering phones casually. Other greetings include "hei" 嗨 (hey).

To say "hello":
您好 - A formal way to say hello. (To your parents or boss)
你好 - A formal way to say hello.
