The title ballerina is only used for the one top female ballet dancer in a professional company, in spite of the fact that many recreational dancers on this site call themselves that just because they take a ballet class. Many ballet companies don't give that title to anyone. There are only a handful of ballerinas in the world. So, the answer is Yes. All ballerinas dance en pointe.

I can't believe how unknowledgeable the peeps on this site are. If you were a student at a major ballet academy and dared to call yourself a ballerina, everyone would laugh in your face. A ballerina is the top principal dancer in a ballet company. They are not dance students and any student who calls themselves a ballerina looks foolish in the eyes of anyone who really knows. So the only one who has the right answer is Mintchips. All ballerinas dance en pointe when doing a classical ballet. But, if they are doing a contemporary piece that calls for something else like dancing barefoot then they might be called upon to do that too. But, your actual question was "are all ballerinas en pointe" and the answer to that is yes. They all can dance en pointe and technically Mintchips is right.

** to the 'dancers' who gave mintchips a thumbs down for her answer, your ignorance is showing.

@drip- She didn't ask if ballet students all dance en pointe. She asked if All Ballerinas are en pointe. All ballerinas can dance en pointe, therefore All ballerinas are en pointe. Of course not all ballet students can dance en pointe.

Not all students who take a ballet class go up on pointe.
Professional dance companies, like ABT- yes all female dancers can dance en pointe.

All professional Ballerinas are en pointe. Once you hit a certain level in your dancing (usually age 12) you receive your Pointe shoes. This is the time the dancer either quites dancing, or begins to study ballet on a more "intense" level. If you go to a ballet performance, almost every dance will be en pointe. Even some modern dancers wear pointe shoes.
You can still do ballet without Pointe shoes, but it would not be on a professional level.

Nope, not all ballerinas are en pointe. I can't do point because I have messed up arches so I do regular ballet.
