The different foods are not created equally. The cheaper foods contain a lot of fillers like corn and wheat, really not the best they also contain less quality proteins and instead tend to use a lot of animal by-products. I don't think there is much if any value to the foods containing vegetables as dogs by nature are carnivores and not omnivores. Recommend you look around and read the ingredients. If you read the ingredients list the ingredients are listed in order of the biggest to smallest concentrations. Technically the closer the food is to the pets natural diet the healthier it is for them. Dogs of course need as much quality animal protein as possible, the corn fillers only add to obesity and cut down the protein they are getting so yes theoretically those cheap full of filler foods can potentially cut the life span of your pet. The big vs small dog foods difference would be the size of the kibble. The cost of many of the pet foods out there is in part at least related to marketing so I don't think the most expensive is always the best choice. Read the ingredients because many times the middle cost foods can be every bit as good as the most expensive.
