Christians, where does the term "unconditional love" come from because it's not mentioned in the Bible?

If the term is not in the Bible so perhaps it is not the most appropriate term to describe God's love because the existence of a heaven and a hell implies there's something conditional about them.

The word unconditional love actually comes from the 60's with the hippy movement. God does love, but he has conditions. You obey ..... you go to Heaven...disobey..you don't.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. [Joh. 14:21]
Christ goes on the claim that the Father will love us more on the condition we love Him,
For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. [Joh. 16:27]

I teach my children unconditional love, for the simple reason as humans they need to love and learn to forgive one another.....

Unconditional love is the love between parent and child.

Unconditional love in no way is about the buy-bull bigot's threats and coercion.

LMAO @ "The bible is full of nothing but conditional love". NOT HARDLY.

Just because the term is not used in the Bible does not mean that Jesus did not show it, does it?

here:

John 3:16

New International Version (NIV)

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Do you see any conditions here?

The bible is full of nothing but conditional love.

It doesn't, someone just made it up. Biblical descriptions of God's love are perfect, infinite, universal, and divine, it is also conditional.

Scriptural patterns of conditional statements declare the conditional nature of divine love for us. Examples include

“If ye keep my commandments, [then] ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.”

“If you keep not my commandments, [then] the love of the Father shall not continue with you.”

“If a man love me, [then] he will keep my words: and my Father will love him.”

“I love them that love me; and those that seek me … shall find me.”

“God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”

The Lord “loveth those who will have him to be their God.”

“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”

probably centuries after the books of the Old/New Testaments were written. In the original scriptures "God" was portrayed as being all powerful but only merciful towards those who believed in him.

Edit. There are hundreds of versions of the christian bible, and they all say different things.

They'll get around that like every other absurdity with another one. God loves you but it is impossible for Him to save you from Hell because your nature is soiled. He weeps for you, honest.

GOD loves his children UNCONDITIONALLY.

God loves you

Just because the Bible doesn't directly say "unconditional" love doesn't mean it doesn't state God's unconditional love for those who seek him.

"How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings." -Psalm 36:7

Remember that the first authorized version of the Bible in English was in (top of my head) 1611. The translations for the Bible over the years are to try and use words that current generations can understand using current words.

Also take the fact that the original writings of the Bible, before being combined by King James, were in Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic. Taking words, say from Hebrew to English is challenging because they do not have vowels. Their letters change sounds depending how certain dots are used. Getting words changed but not to loose the meaning is challenging but has worked for centuries.

A simple Google search will yield plenty of matching results from credited sources. Basically, God is love, and sin is sin. Love is a two way street. You love your child but hate the wrongs they do.

There simply is no catch. Accept Jesus and follow Him. God's love is free. Entering Heaven is based on trust with Him.

A Jehovah's Witness would say the same thing like "trinity" is not in the bible, yet it is implied in several scriptures. If you are conditional, then so is your answer.
2011-09-27 4:51 am
It simply means that He still loves me even when I do stupid stuff.
It means that I can not earn His love.

It is not a license to sin.

It pretty much applies to those who have humbled themselves, repented of sin, and become born again. Those who have not been reconciled are still considered to be enemies of God. Never the less, God loves them and wants them to be saved. How is that for love?

Has the term "hate the sin, love the sinner" become too cliche'?

read the book of hosea or the parable of the prodigal son or the death of Jesus

God's love for mankind is unconditional but getting into heaven and seeing God or receiving things from Him, is all conditional.
