Problem with Daily life English?

Hi,
I have a problem with using daily life English (like branches, railings, plates, bowls etc)
I have been studying in Australia for two years.
Academic English is not a big deal to me. I can write thousands words essay in just a day
But i can't really get into real life conversation. People do not use academic words in daily conversation at all.
Is reading children's books a good way for me to learn? What else could i do?
Thank you!

Make friends with english speakers and speak english only. When you're with your friends, even if they speak your native language, speak english to them.

I've noticed with a lot of ESL students is that they tend to become friends with people from their country, speaking their native language, while this is understandable and as it is a nature of human nature to find comfort from someone going through the same experiences, I highly advise against it if you're planning on improving your english.

Either make friends with english speakers or make a rule to speak only english to everyone. You can explain to them that you're practicing on improving your english and so you prefer to speak in english.

Hello, I'm Chinese as well. I would recommend reading teenage books at the library because a lot of these books use everyday language. It will help you improve your English.
