Commom salt consists chlorine and sodium ions:each sodium atom has lostone electron and each chlorine atom has gained one electron. In a crystal of salt the separation of two such ions is 2.8x10^-10 m
a) show that the force between a sodium ion and a chlorine ion is about
3x10^-9N
b) Does the force in part(a) represent the net force acting on each ion?Give reason

take electronic charge=1.6x10^-19

(a) Force between Na nad Cl ions
= (9x10^9) x (1.6x10^-19)^2/(2.8x10^-10)^2 N = 2.94 x 10^-9 N

(b) No. The net force is zero, as there are Chlorine ions surrounding a sodium ion such that the forces acting on a sodium ion by all the chlorine ions balance out.
