The method
Burn a magnesium ribbon in the unknown gas, and then heat the solid residue formedwith water. If the unknown gas containsnitrogen, a pungent gas (ammonia) is formed which changes moist red litmuspaper to blue.

The explanation
Burning magnesium reacts with nitrogen gas to give solid magnesium nitride.
3Mg(s) + N2(g) → Mg3N2(s)

Magnesium nitride reacts with water to give ammonia, which will escape from thereaction mixture when heated.

Among them, the most possible gas stored in the test tube is carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
好荒謬wor=.=..

Here is a simple way, but may not be so accurate. I think you are studying Form 2 integrated science. In Unit 7 Living Things and Air, you have learnt how to test oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapour. But the textbook tells you nitrogen is fairly unreactive, there is no simple test for nitrogen.

The method is the same as testing oxygen. Light a wooden splint to get a burning splint . Bring the burning splint to a test tube filled with nitrogen gas. If the gas is nitrogen, the flame will go out quickly.

But if you see this phenomenon, the gas in the test tube can also be carbon dioxide , neon , argon and helium . Among them, the most possible gas stored in the test tube is carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

So you need to have two test tubes containing the same gas. One test tube has been used in the above test. Use the other test tube, but this time use hydrogencarbonate indicator (you should know this chemical). Add a few drop of hydrogencarbonate indicator to the test tube, if the indicator changes from red to yellow , it is carbon dioxide. If the indicator remains red in one test tube, and the flame goes out in another test tube, it is very probably nitrogen.

No,nitrogen is an unreactive gas.(There is no simple test for nitrogen.
