Gamey

(Cambridge dictionary) : having the strong smell or taste of game (= wild animals or birds that are killed to eat)

在飲食界,或飲食的字典裏,他們會用rammish(但牛津並未錄用)

We are told the restaurant selects meat only from 12 to 18 month old castrated black-headed white sheep from certain parts of Inner Mongolia, which is supposed to be extra tender and without the “rammish” smell some people can't stand. Sure enough, every cut of thinly sliced mutton we tried was tender and extremely tasty – though still a bit rammish .

Although hiskitty00 does not like the answer of 'The smell of sheep' 或 'The smell of mutton', I have to say that the particular smell of mutton is called variably as smell of mutton, mutton smell, lamb smell etc.
Gamey is for describing the smell of games ( 野味)ie wild animals hunted and eaten, not domesticated sheep or lambs.

Referring to FP's comments, please note that 膻 is usually about mutton and I think that is what hiskittyOO's question is about too. This is why my English answer is smell of mutton, mutton smell, lamb smell etc.

Although膻 is sometimes used to describe generally the strong taste/smell if wild animals in which case gamey is the English equivalent, mutton smell etc is more specific to for the special smell of mutton.

An analogy is that beef, mutton and pork are all red meat. But the meat of sheep is called specifically mutton.

An analogy is that beef, mutton and pork are all red meat. To call the meat of sheep as mutton and not red meat is absolutely correct.

hiskitty00 ,
hahatse's answer meets your requirement as well as means the smell of mutton. It is the best answer for you.

To eiachan,

I really doubt if we should say 'I can't stand its mutton taste' when we are eating a dish of rabbit or wild birds. Is there a general term (like gamey) to describe such a disgusting taste?
