How do cats get herpes in the eye?

I got my cat, a rescue, when he was 10 weeks. He is now almost 2. From day one, all shots have been up to date. Since he was younger, we notice a cloudy haze over his right eye and he would keep it shut. Didn't seem to hurt or bother him. Vet initially said uvitis and gave eye drops. No change. Recent vet appt for yearly he said probably herpes. How will this affect him? He hasn't been in pain and the "squinting" has stopped. Will he eventually go blind? And could it be contagious to my other cats?
