Tom and Mary are due south and due east of bus stop respectively, distance
between them is 60m.They walk toward bus stop at same time with their own
constant speeds. After 6 seconds, they both 27m away from bus stop.If Mary walks slower than tom by2m/s,find their speeds.

Initially, Mary, Tom and the bus stop form a right-angled triangle with hypotenuse (斜邊) 60m.

Let v be the speed of Tom and the speed of Mary is therefore (v-2)

By distance travelled = speed x time

Distance travelled by Tom in 6 sec = 6v m
Distance travelled BY Mary in 6 sec = 6(v-2) m

As their final distances from the bus stop are both 27 m

By Pythagoras' Theorem, (27+6v)^2 + (27+ 6(v-2)^2 = 60^2
By solving the quadratic equation, you will get the answer! ^^
