3 kg of a solution contains 40% of alcohol by weight . How much alochol should be added to obtain a solution containg 50% of alcohol by weight in kg ?

Originally, there are 3 * 40% = 1.2 kg alcohol in the solution

Let the alcohol should be added is x kg

(1.2 + x)/(3 + x) = 0.5

1.2 + x = 1.5 + 0.5x

0.5x = 0.3

x = 5/3 kg

Amount needed to add
= 3/40% * 50% - 3
= 5/4 * 3 - 3
= 15/4 - 3
= 3/4 kg
