About to finish my 2 year degree. Want to do USAF-RES. Advice?

1. Basic is 8.5 weeks long

Tech School is anywhere from 2 months to 8 months long, just depends on the job you do, average is 4 months.

But then your unit might require you to do seasoning training and stay on active duty for 6 months to earn your 5 level after Tech School.

So you can easily be on active duty for a year, before returning home for monthly drill.

Tech school will not be near your home.

2. Depending on the state, the national guard can offer better educational benefits, since some states off their own educational benefits.

3. Reserve educartional benefit are

Tuition assistence up to $4,500 per year
Reserve Select GI Bill - up to $335 per month for a full time student

Reserves does NOT pay all your college cost

4, National Guard has the same benefits above, but some states offer 50% or 100% tuition waivers.

5. No educational benefits start, until after you are job qualified and have graduated tech School.

I agree with Bo. I did 12-years in the military, 6-Army, 6-Air Force. You can't do much better than the Air Force - it would be an excellent choice. Best of Luck.

I would strongly suggest looking at the Air National Guard also. The Guard, by and large, tends to have better educational benefits (state in addition to federal).

That being said..about 40% of all new Reservist and Guardsmen are full time college students. That is the reason they join the Guard or Reserve versus active duty.

You most likely will just take a semester of to complete basic and tech school. Hundreds of thousands have done just that and have turned out just fine.
