A piece of string is 40 centimeters long. It is cut into three pieces. The longest piece is 3 times as long as the middle-sized piece and the shortest piece is 23 centimeters shorter than the longest piece. Find the lengths of the three pieces.

let x be the length of the middle-sized piece.
x+3x+(3x-23)=40
7x-23=40
7x=63
x=9
length of the longest piece=3*9=27cm
length of the middle-sized piece=9 cm
length of the shortest piece=27-23=4 cm.

3x be the longest piece,
3x-23 be the shortest piece

3x+3x-23+x=40
7x=63
x=9

Shortest: 3(x)-23=4 cm
Middle-sized: 9 cm
Longest: 3(9)=27 cm
