let x be the present age of Cindy and y be the present age of dad,
x-2 = 1/5 (y) ---- 1
y-8 = 3x------ 2
solve 1 and 2, we have
x = 9
y = 35
so dad is 35 years old,
cindy is 9 years old.

x-10=(y-10)/5
3x-8=y
x=16
y=40
