Hi, I feel that I'm using "the" excessively in writing. Can someone tell me when I should not use it?

Sorry, but there is no concrete answer to this question. I can’t just tell you that you’re only allowed to write the word “the” once every fifty words. Ahem. No. Writing doesn’t work like that. There is no definite answer.

However, what you should NOT do is write, “The train went by. The dog barked. The cat meowed. The. The. The. The.” That would be a little overboard….But the same goes for all words; you wouldn’t want to start every sentence any single word. “A train went by. A dog barked. A cat meowed. A. A. A.” It sounds just as bad.

The trick, I suppose, is to just make sure that you don’t keep on repeating yourself. Repetition anywhere—whether it be a single word or an entire phrase—is a bad idea. If you’d like, you could visit this page on my blog….It gives tips on how to make your writing sound better.

Hope I helped! Good luck and happy writing.

The question you pose is one of the more challenging ones I've had to answer on the internet, as the rules are in answering this question. The best thing to do is to just reread all of the sentences you write, check the word count, and shoot for the target of about one "the" every fifty words on the page. This tip should make you one of the best writers in your class in no the time!
