Tips for a shy guy going into college?

Im going to Sewanee in August. Its a small private school up in tennessee. Anyway, I have never been a "social butterfly", meaning that I have a few close friends but have trouble making new friends, etc. So for any current college students or graduates, what are some tips to meeting people and making friends in college?

Just be yourself and remember that this is a fresh start for you. None of the other freshmen will know each other, so they'll be looking for friends too. Just talk to new people, and have an open mind and seem interested in what they are talking about, and you'll have new friends in no time!

Join clubs. If they have a Toastmasters club, that is an excellent one. When you meet people break the ice by offering to buy them lunch.

Take a speech class, it will help you get over your shyness and you can meet new people. I graduated at a community college and I took like 5 speech classes plus I got help. I would usually be quiet at school but at home I'm louder. Ever since I took speech classes I am comfortable speaking as well as me getting older, I just am more confident. You need to get out there more and get to know classmates you feel that you have the same interests. Then eventually you will get new and more friends.

Colleges usually do different mixers on opening days. Go to one and be open, don't be afraid to talk to people.

Know what your goals are. Is what you want a girlfriend? Quantity(If yes, why)? Friends you can talk to? Friendship takes time and effort, so just be yourself and don't feel too rushed if you don't get what you want right away.
