Do sewing machine needles differ depending on their machines?

I broke the needle on my singer stylist 834 and want to buy a new one today. Do I need to get a needle specific to my machine? If yes, which one? Thanks!

All home sewing machines in the last 50 years use the same needle system -- but sergers often don't use the same needle system. Look for "sewing machine needles" as opposed to overlock/serger needles, and then choose the correct size and point style for your project.

ps: a size 12/80 universal point needle will sew almost all garment weight fabrics. Maybe not as well as a specialty point and the correct size, but that can be a starting point for infrequently used machines.

You will not be able to buy just one. They come several to a package. You can use the Singer brand or Schmetz, which is easy to find. If you buy a combo package you will have a variety of sizes.

Be sure to insert the needle according to the manual or the top and bobbin threads will not form a stitch.

to add to Kay's answer.

The size needle matters depending on what you are sewing. Look for the right needle size to match the fabric you are sewing on.

I would suggest that you buy a multi pack of universal needles. That way you end up wiht needles that will fit your machine and you'll get one for silk, one for demin, one for cotton, etc.
